Title: East Asia
Today I read about scientists who have discovered oil in the Taklimakan Desert China estimates that there are 74 billion barrels of oil deep under the sand. That is three times the oil reserve of the United States. In the mid-1990s, China built a road deep into the desert to access these oil reserves. More than 360 oil wells were drilled. Workers faced brutal building conditions. The hottest daytime temperature recorded was 140 Fahrenheit and the coldest was minus 22 Fahrenheit. Oil in the Taklimakan could change China’s economy. This natural resource could provide China with enough oil to support its economy without having to import oil for a long time.
- Chicken soup for the teenage soul
- The Gossiper
- A woman repeated a bit of gossip about a neighbor. The person that it concerned was deeply hurt and offended. Later the woman that spread the rumor found out that it was untrue. She went to a wise old sage to find out what she could do to repair the damage. He told her to go to the marketplace and buy a chicken and have it killed. The on her way home pluck the feathers and drop them along the road one by one. The next day he told her to go and collect the feathers and bring them back to him. She returned with only three the man said “ you see its easy to drop them but impossible to get them back.” he said that it’s the same thing with gossip its easy to spread the rumor but impossible to take it back.
- I think that this story is true. I say this because a lot of people like to spread rumors. Then they realize they were wrong and cant ever take it back.
- One interesting thing I found was that she realized she had done wrong and couldn’t take it back
The Princess of the Golden Island.
This story is about a girl whose parents were royal, died making her the princess. But since she was too young to rule her people, someone was to rule until she was old enough to rule. The princess' uncle decided to rule, but he was evil so he sent his servents to starve the Princess until she gets sick and dies. The Princess was given old clothes to wear, and disgusting and very little food to eat. But all in all, the Princess never complained. The servent, Yust was the one who was entitled to watch over the Princess at all times. One day he fell asleep and ants were eating his flesh for sleeping in their path. The Princess moved him out the way so he could sleep, and she was bitten on her hands also. She kept showing how much she cared to Yust, even though he was heartless and showed no love to anyone. But eventually they grew a bond together and they both loved each other like family. Yust gave her a magic hermonica that will only work magic in the hands of someone who is a good person. When the day came for the Princess to start ruling, the Princess' uncle wanted her to take a test before she could rule over. She had to be test of Patience, Courage, and Love. The test for patience was, she had to seperate poppy seeds from the gravel in an hour. She cried and birds came to help her. Next was Courage, she had to fight snakes, ready to attack her, her hermonica played music that made them stiff. And last, was Love. She had to show true love, so she told her uncle she loved him with true love and that she does not want to rule. It shocked the uncle so much that he fell over and died. The Princess became ruler of Golden Island.
I thought this story had the dumbest ending ever. How can someone just fall over and die?
Chicken Soup for the Soul
Title: What You Are Is As Important As What You Do
This Story takes place on a sunny afternoon in Oklahoma City. A proud father of the name Bobby Lewis was taking his two sons to go miniature golfing. He walked up to the man in the ticket counter and asked “how much is it to get in?” The young man replied, “$3.00 for you and $3.00 for any kid who is under six. We let kids under six in for free. How old are they?” And honestly the man answered “ the Lawyer is three and the doctor is seven so I guess I owe you six bucks.” And the man said “ hey mister did you win the lottery or something? You could of saved yourself three bucks and told me the older one was six; I wouldn’t of known the difference. Bobby replied, “Yes, that may be true, but the kids would of known the difference.
What was interesting in this story is how they quoted Ralph Waldo Emerson it goes perfectly with this story. “Who you are speaks so loudly I can’t hear what your saying”---- Ralph Waldo Emerson

This morning I read the first three sections of Encounters and Foundations to 1800 by Gary Q. Arpin. They were about Europeans first interacting with American Indians. They relied on Native Americans to show them how to build canoes and shelters, how to make clothing from buckskin, and how to plant crops. Native Americans were eager to acquire European firearms, textiles and steel tools. Americans Indians vastly outnumbered the colonist. The new arrival of European settlers had a deadly impact on Native Americans. Europeans brought new diseases that the Indians could not get over. They were forced to move out of there homes after their friendship was no longer needed. The most interesting fact I found was that in 1600 the estimated number of Native Americans in New England was about 70,000 to 1000,000. I liked this passage because it was informational.
*East Asia
In the early 1800s, Hong Kong was a remote place where people fished and farmed. Nobody could have predicted that in less than 200 years. Today, nearly seven million people live and work in Hong Kong, making it a very crowded place. All of Hong Kong’s people live in an area that is less than half the size of Rhode Island. The bright lights of Hong Kong’s buildings and harbor fill the night sky. Many people in China ride bicycles to work. With millions of people commuting to work each day, bicycling can offer relief from traffic jams and crowded trains and buses. Migrant workers face lots of challenges. Many must continue to run their farms and work in the city in order to support their families.
